MOMENT HANDBOOK

Start with one holding. Understand every number.

You do not need to learn every investing term first. Import or add one asset, then learn how to manage accounts, review holdings and records, and understand cost and returns.

01 / GET STARTED

Bring in an asset you own.

An “account” groups assets from a broker, exchange or bank. It is not a Moment sign-in. When you first add an asset or open Bulk Import with no accounts, Moment creates “My Account” for you. You can split assets across accounts later.

01 / CHOOSE

Import or add manually

Use transaction history when you have it. If you only have current holdings, a holdings CSV, statement or screenshot can get you started.

02 / REVIEW

Check the preview

Confirm the account, symbol, buy or sell, date, quantity, price and currency. Fill in a missing cost in the preview.

03 / CONFIRM

Check holdings and records

After importing, compare the resulting holdings and ledger. If a whole batch is wrong, undo that import and try again.

Know which file you have. Transaction history preserves the timeline of buys, sells and dividends. A holdings screenshot only tells Moment what you own now; it cannot reconstruct past trades or historical returns.
02 / IMPORT

Export from your broker. Review in Moment.

Where possible, export a transaction CSV covering as much of your holding period as the broker makes available. Open Bulk Import in Moment and drag in or select the file. The app also accepts PDF statements, holdings CSVs and screenshots. It shows a preview before adding anything to your ledger. PDF and screenshot recognition depends on text quality and layout, so check every recognized row before confirming.

  1. Choose the correct broker account and date range. A file covering only the last year may omit earlier buys and distort cost and returns.
  2. Prefer an activity or transaction report. If you only have a current-position list, use a holdings CSV, PDF statement or screenshot.
  3. In the preview, correct unrecognized symbols or missing costs and check dates and currencies. Review any rows flagged as duplicates.
  4. After import, reconcile quantity, cost and dividends; check cash separately. At present, only a recognized IBKR Activity Statement imports ending cash from its Cash Report. Other broker files do not reconstruct your cash balance. Use “Undo this import” if the batch needs to be redone.
Import scope: Broker activity imports mainly recognize buys, sells and dividends. Transfers, options, interest and other unrecognized transaction types may be skipped; check the skipped-row notice and add important missing records manually.

A holdings screenshot works, too.

If you do not have a CSV or PDF, start with a screenshot of your broker app’s holdings page. Keep the asset name or ticker, quantity and cost visible, including the column headings when possible.

  1. Open “+” → “Bulk Import” in Moment, then drop in or choose the saved screenshot file.
  2. Recognized screenshot rows are unchecked by default. Review the ticker, quantity, cost and currency in each row, correct mistakes, then select the rows to import.
  3. Check the result in Holdings. A screenshot brings in current positions, not past trades or historical returns. If you later obtain full activity records, review duplicate notices in the import preview.

03 / THE NUMBERS

What is each number telling you?

A gain amount and a return percentage are not always directly interchangeable. First understand what goes into the amount, then how returns account for money moving in and out.

Total assets
The sum of current position values across accounts. One position is approximately quantity × current price × current exchange rate. Cash recorded in Moment is included.
Holding cost
The buy cost of units you still hold, including buy fees. Foreign-currency buys are converted using the exchange rate on the trade date.
Unrealized gain
Current value minus the cost of current holdings. Market prices and exchange rates can both change it before you sell.
Realized gain
Net sale proceeds minus the average cost allocated to sold units, plus recorded dividends and similar income. Sale fees reduce net proceeds.
Cumulative gain
Unrealized plus realized gain, including assets you have sold completely. It is different from total assets minus the cost of current holdings.
Today / period gain
Today’s gain uses opening holdings and today’s transactions. Period gain sums changes between daily portfolio snapshots after subtracting net contributions. A deposit is not profit; without a comparable starting point, the result may be “—”.
Period return / annualized
Period percentage is time-weighted, chaining daily returns after removing cash-flow effects. The annualized figure on Overview uses money-weighted XIRR across your transaction history, so it reflects when you invested. Moment hides annualized return when the history is shorter than 90 days or XIRR cannot be calculated. Neither percentage has to equal gain divided by cost.

A simple example

Buy 10 shares at 100 each, with no fees. At a current price of 110, their value is 1,100, cost is 1,000 and unrealized gain is +100.

Then sell four shares at 120 while the remaining six are valued at 110. The remaining value is 660, cost is 600 and unrealized gain is +60. The sale realizes +80, so cumulative gain is +140. This example has no currency conversion or dividends.

04 / EVERYDAY USE

Keep using Moment, one step at a time.

You do not need a complete history before you begin. Add what you hold now, then use Accounts, Holdings and Records as your portfolio changes.

01 / ACCOUNTS

Separate your sources.

Create an account for each broker, bank or wallet. Open an account to see its own holdings; you can edit its name later.

02 / RECORDS

Add a transaction.

Choose “+” → “New Record”, then select the account and asset and enter the action, date, quantity and price. You can also add your first asset here without an import file.

03 / EXPLORE

Go from overview to detail.

See changes on Overview, open an asset from Holdings, and filter Records by asset, type and date. Open a record to edit it.

04 / DATA

Export or sync when needed.

Pro can export CSV files for accounts, assets, transactions and latest quotes from Settings → Data, or turn on iCloud sync. Sample data is neither synced nor exported.

05 / CORRECT

Fix a mistake.

Open a transaction in Records to edit or delete it. If a whole batch you just imported is wrong, choose “Undo this import” on the completion screen, check the file and import it again.

06 / SAMPLE

Explore with sample data.

Use Settings → Data to switch to sample data and explore Overview, Holdings and Records. Switch back to “My Portfolio” when you are ready. Sample data stays separate from your own ledger.
